NO ACTION TO BE TAKEN AGAINST REMORSEFUL BLOGGER AFTER INSULTING SULTAN

PENANG, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- The government does not intend to take action against a blogger who had insulted the late Sultan of Johor, Sultan Iskandar ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail, after he realised his mistake and openly apologised for it on his blog.

Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the blogger, however, would have to formally apologise to the parties concerned.

The 29-year-old blogger known as Aduka Taruna had posted an allegedly insulting comment on his blog following the demise of Sultan Iskandar last Friday.

The blogger was reported to have surrendered himself at the Kota Baharu district police headquarters in Kelantan yesterday evening after police received more than 20 reports lodged against him for his insulting posting.

Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff was quoted as saying that police would form a special task force to investigate the matter. The initial report against the blogger was made at the Muar police station.

Rais had earlier said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would investigate and take action against the blogger under Section 233 of the MCMC Act 1998, and if found guilty, he could be jailed for up to seven years.

Following public condemnation and threats for his posting, the blogger removed the posting and made a public apology.
